June 15 Match Report: Foothills WFC vs Real Salt Lake Women

Calgary, Alberta - After a 2-1 result over Real Salt Lake Women, the Calgary Foothills WFC secure their spot at the top of the United Women’s Soccer West Conference and drives them one step closer to the playoff rounds.

Foothills WFC Head Coach Troye Flannery thought the team had moments of excellence throughout the game, and was proud of the girls for pulling off another win against a strong Salt Lake side.

“The first 25 or so, we were exceptional, pure joy going forward and playing through or between the lines but at times we lacked that ruthlessness required to finish teams. They (Real Salt Lake) are organized, well coached and made it very difficult the rest of the way as we struggled with the chaos. The midfield 3 was superb, Lauren scored again, Mya looked dangerous and our fullbacks got forward. Credit to our on-field leadership for managing the game - we will take it the win.”

Lauren Raimondo opened the score for the Foothills WFC in the 12th minute off of a brilliant run and cross from young full-back Grace Stordy. They then extended their lead in the 16th minute with a loft over the top from Christabel Oduru and a composed finish from Rehana Murani.

Minutes later, Real Salt Lake scored to decrease the gap and take them one step closer to a draw entering half.

Although no goals were scored in the second half of the match, it was far from uninteresting. Both teams created scoring opportunities and battled hard throughout the half. Real Salt Lake pushed forward looking for an equalizer, but the Foothills WFC were able to manage the game well and secure another 3 points.

The Foothills WFC are on the road next weekend and will take on So Cal Crush on June 22nd and Santa Clarita on June 24th in California. It will be a very important weekend for the Foothills and they will be looking to continue their undefeated streak.
