July 20 Match Report: Foothills FC vs Colorado Rapids U23
Whittier, CA - It took Foothills FC a little bit of late drama to secure their spot in the Western Conference Final and it was second half substitute Ali Musse who provided the magic in the 83rd minute to clinch the 1-0 victory over the Mountain Division Champion Colorado Rapids U23.
"I'm delighted with the boys proper team performance today." Foothills FC Head Coach exclaimed after the match, "We controlled both sides of the ball against a very good Colorado Rapids U23 side."
Even though Foothills had had the majority of the ball and quality chances throughout the game, they were unable to get anything past the Rapids keeper who made a number of acrobatic saves to keep Foothills off the scoresheet, "We had our chances early but couldn't finish them. Camargo had a good chance in the first half, Patino threatened a number of times, and Pasquotti was his industrious self, but we just needed that little bit of extra quality." Wheeldon continued, "We got it in the 83rd min when our game changer Ali Musse came on with a 60 yard run and a clinical finish."
Todays victory was the 8th straight for Foothills and the 4th straight clean sheet. The last time somebody scored on Foothills Keeper Marco Carducci was 4 weeks ago, which is a duration of 441 minutes without allowing a goal.
Carducci was very quick to credit his teammates, "Its nice to get the win, also our 4th consecutive shut out, which shows our commitment as a team to do the work both sides of the ball. The lads in front of me were excellent again. Ali’s goal was that bit of magic he has and exactly what we needed today, what a great way to win it. Now we focus on recovering quickly and on to the final."
Although Wheeldon was pleased with the effort today he is already looking forward and preparing for tomorrows Western Conference Final, "The boys are finding ways to win. Today it was very hot conditions and we pulled through but now we will recover, we’ll move on and look forward to the finals tomorrow."
The Western Conference Final will feature Calgary Foothills FC and FC Tucson, Saturday at Rio Hondo College in Whittier CA with kickoff at 8:00pm MST.
Wildcard FC Tucson shocked the #1 seeded and host FC Golden State Force with an amazing bicycle kick goal in the 90th minute to tie the match 2-2, then won in penalties after a scoreless 30 minutes of extra time.
