Weekly Update Press Release – May 6th to 12th, 2019

The reigning USL 2 (formerly PDL) champions Foothills FC travelled to Saskatoon to compete in the “SK Summer Soccer Series” against the SK selects team, a group of elite players from the ‘Land of living skies’.

The nearly perfect pre-season continued with 2-1 and 2-0 wins for Foothills over the Selects. The Saturday game featured 3,067 fans at SMF Field. The weekend’s goals came from Tofa Fakunle, Drake Rendle, Euan Bauld and Domenic Poletto.

Fakunle said the fans provided a good environment for the team to play in.

“To go into that and show how much we’ve grown, full credit to the coaching staff Leon Hapgood and Ryan Gyaki (who led the team during the trip). They have set the standard for what is required.

“The culture we are trying to build is all about including everyone. We have talked about getting the job done together. Attacking, defending and celebrating together.”

Gyaki is the head coach of the Mount Royal Cougars from Canada West and joins the summer staff this season.

That makes five pre-season matches complete before the USL2 season begins in Seattle against the Sounders U23 squad on May 17. A sweep of university teams in Spokane, Washington, then a close loss to Cavalry FC before the trip east.
